Boat research

October 2020

Well, we didn't buy a river boat and we're not travelling the waterways of Europe.  We're not even travelling the Mediterranean unless the UK can negotiate some sort of visa with the EU that will let UK citizens spend more than 90 days in every 180 in a Shengen country.

Instead, Sea Dweller will be moored in Spain whilst its owners have residential status.  It's not quite what we planned but it's still a good alternative.  We couldn't take the boat to the Mediterranean ourselves due to Covid-19 restrictions and some rather critical problems with the boat that had to be fixed.

What kind of boat do we need?  Well, we like comfort but our budget doesn't stretch to a Sunseeker.  Not only that, but a Sunseeker is probably very unsuitable for canals and waterways.

A narrow boat isn't necessary for the canals in Europe but a Dutch barge would do the job nicely.  However, this was ruled out because there's not enough outdoor living space and it couldn't cope with the coastal waterways should we want to journey around France and the Iberian peninsular and into the Mediterranean, or even as far as the Black Sea.

No, it has to be capable of travelling comfortably at speeds as slow as 6 knots and as fast as 20 knots.  Two engines will give reassurance.  The height and width are both critical so, unfortunately, a Lagoon motor yacht was ruled out (too wide).  A boat with too much 'air draft' would prevent us going down canals with low bridges.
